It looks as if Google has come to agreement with the MPEG-LA group regarding the patents for using it. I wonder how much they had to cough up for this? But hey, Google has the cash. In theory this should greatly accelerate the adoption of video encoded with the VP8 format, but I doubt it will have much of an effect. H.264 encoders are built into tons of cell phones and other devices. Maybe videos from folks who pirate stuff online will use it if its as good as H.264. Of course if some good encoders are created for it that would help. I’ll keep an eye on it for the next year.
